You keep your little ones safe and buckled up with a car seat while driving, right? But – do you make sure they’re safe in and around the water by giving them swim lessons, too?

Automobile crashes are the No. 1 cause of accidental death for children ages 5-12. The second leading cause of accidental death? Drowning.

Back in the day, parents didn’t put so much emphasis on car seats – but now that we know better, we do better. Nowadays there’s so much to think about when it comes to car seats: What type, forward-or rear-facing, booster seats, five-point harnesses, until what age, etc.

How many of us put that much thought into preparing for our kids to be safer around water? We have!

Why swim lessons are Vital

Goldfish Swim School was created with a dream to teach kids how to swim and be safer in and around the water. Our curriculum was especially designed to make sure kids as young as 4 months old can start learning this lifelong, lifesaving skill, by teaching a variety of techniques, including:

What to do in a possible emergency situation

We may not always know what to do in every situation, but we can prepare for the possibilities. In each and every swim lesson, our instructors at Goldfish Swim School use integrity, compassion and trust to teach water safety skills. These include how to recognize the signs of drowning, what to do in an emergency situation, and how to prevent drowning.

Breath control

One of the key elements to swimming – and being safer in the water – is breath control. It’s about learning how to hold your breath for longer periods of time, and how to instinctively be able to go under water and come up for air without panicking – particularly unexpectedly.

How to get in and out of pool safely

It may not seem important as an adult, but for little ones it’s a pretty big deal to know how to get in and out of the pool safely. For one, it lessens the chance for injury. But it also means that in a potential emergency situation, it’s automatic. There’s no fear of how to get in or out, because it’s been done so much already that it’s completely natural.

How to tread water

Sure, many kids can go play in the water just fine, as long as they’re able to stand. What happens if they fall in, or get thrown in, or get pulled out to where the water is too deep to touch? At Goldfish Swim School, we make sure kids are confident in the water, no matter how deep it is. We start off gradually, teaching them how to treat water for a few seconds at a time – before working up to a full minute.

How to back float

Sometimes we all can get a little unexpectedly tired while swimming. No sweat: We teach children how to roll over and float on their backs, easy-peasy. Calmly. Confidently. With extraordinary results. So they can catch their breath, not panic, and stay safer in the water. Because every time in the water should be a GOLDEN experience.
