Earlier this year, the American Academy of Pediatrics warned about the increased threat of childhood drowning due to the pandemic—with states like Florida, Texas, Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan all reporting increases in the number of drowning-related accidents.

With drowning rates on the rise, our mission of helping children be safer in and around the water has never been more important.

Although we weren’t able to be in the pool with our students for several months, we didn’t let COVID-19 stop us from sharing the important message of drowning prevention. Instead, we focused on virtual ways to bring our community together and educate families about water safety.

We are proud to have been able to reopen all of our pools as of August, Safer. Stronger. Together.™ Now, we must keep our doors open to continue providing children with essential lifesaving swim skills.

Even with summer behind us and winter on the horizon, swim lessons and water safety are still more important than ever.

Drowning remains the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1-4, and the second leading cause of injury-related death for kids 5-14. These drownings are not inclusive to pools, lakes and rivers. Children can drown in as little as two inches of water – making ditches, bathtubs and toilets a safety risk as we continue to spend more time at home, likely distracted by conference calls and daily household chores.

DROWNING DOESN’T STOP FOR A PANDEMIC & NEITHER SHOULD LIFESAVING SWIM LESSONS

With the ability to reduce the rate of drowning by up to 88%, access to swim lessons are essential to saving lives! That’s why we’ve joined forces with the USA Swimming Aquatics Coalition to educate public officials about the profound impact swim lessons can have when it comes to drowning prevention and help purpose-driven aquatics facilities advocate for ‘essential’ status.

According to the CDC, there is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread in a properly maintained pool. And, with the ability to provide a controlled learning environment, swim schools have the ability to safely operate in compliance with public health requirements and provide children with lifesaving skills.
